Paid Sick and Family Medical Leave
Parents should never have to choose between their job and caring for their families. Too often though, hardworking Americans have to give up income they rely on, or even risk losing their job, when they have to take time off for caregiving responsibilities or pregnancy.
The current federal unpaid leave law, the Family and Medical Leave Act, doesn’t do enough to provide stability for working families. This law protects less than half of American workers, and many of those who do qualify can’t afford to take leave without pay.
It is time for Congress and state legislatures to pass new laws to guarantee that workers will continue to earn a portion of their pay when they take time away from work to address a serious health concern or pregnancy, to care for a family member, or to care for a newborn or newly-adopted child.
